Lame

This day has been just lame.

One of those every thing you said out to do goes, well, not well? I was all excited for it, first snow day of the year and all that.

Ha.

Today was one of those stupid days. Saying it didn't go well, really seems an understatement. For example, we tried to set up the tree. Its 8 years old and simply dead...and things went downhill from there from the extreme: Gas in eye of 12 year old to the aluminum foil being completely messed up (that stuffs expensive!) to thing on the wall being broke, "THE" comb being lost (and yes, I have bought more of THE comb the mysteriously disappear around here and I'm down to just one again!) and all things in between (have you ever rewrapped a frozen turkey? its even harder when your foild is all messed up) I haven't touched on the constant fighting that occured. Oy. I'm sure no one is nominating me for Mother of the year.

Oh, I also didn't get my MIL Bday gift delivered. (insert head slap!) She lives 2 BLOCKS from me, this shouldn't be hard...and it wouldn't have been...if this day hadn't been one of THOSE days.

Anyway. I'm going to bed. Clinic tomorrow and the roads will most likely be icy. Even tough its a clinic day it has to be better then today.

Its the end of the month..will I keep writing? Perhaps, its theraputic. And maybe I'll get better at it!

Organizing and a joke

Hey ho its Monday....I tackled the laundry, all 8 loads are done! And I reorganized the cabinets and it finally occured to me that I need a drug cabinet. Its a lovely thing....I could get all weepy or snarky about this....I'm just going to leave it alone. I have a designated one in my kitchen now. Oy.

And now for the joke!

One man said to the other, "You know, there are really only three kinds of people in the world: those who can count......

And those who can't!

mmmmwah!

I'm behind

Today I woke up feeling a little stressed and behind. My baby will turn 4 next week...and I've done NOTHING about it which is unlike me and ridiculous a bit as its all we've talked about around here for the last 2 weeks.

A few trips to some stores today and we got 'er all fixed up. I feel better.

Oh wait, Christmas is HOW MANY DAYS AWAY???

Crud.

Ahhh research

Update from yesterdays post....I did some internet digging. Apparently G's rages/tantrums are completely part of the deal for someone undergoing chemo. I read where one person discribed it as being 9 1/2 mo pregnant, for 3 years. Another who said that children were unfortunate because they can't refuse treatment, adults can, and some say they would rather die then go through it.

So, its apparently just part of the new "normal" around here.

I really am starting to dislike that phrase.

What did people do before the internet? They had to feel so alone in this. Being able to read and learn more is a true comfort.

Feeling thankful

I struggled with it today. I know I have so much to be thankful for, and I am for those things. But mostly my heart was just sad. Its been a rough rough fall. So many rotten things happening to people I know...or know through people. A friend lost her son the first day of school, another her son after 2 weeks in Afghanistan. A friend diagnosed with MS. Another who has brain cancer...and the meds aren't working...who lost her brother today. Another, more of an aquaintence, who's daughter's Leukemia came back. Add broken bones, kid issues, and our own Leukemia beast to fight, and I just feel quiet and sad inside.

Today was a truely nice day with family. Everyone got along, no one said anything dumb that hurt peoples feelings. It was all just very nice. G did great! I was so grateful that we had stayed yesterday and got her blood transfusion instead of putting it off.

Then on the way home she threw a fit that isn't like any fit she's thrown before being diagnosed with cancer. Its actually the second time she's had it, but this time was way worse. She freakes out, grabs her head and starts chanting: I can't stop thinking so many things!!! She throws whatevers handy, and whips off clothes she can, tonight being her had, her shoes and socks.

Is this an overtired 4 year old thing? Is this a reaction to chemo? Is this brain damage from radiation? I want so badly for it just to be the first thing. There were no real triggers, she was sitting in the car and started chanting real quiet at first. Then it escalated and went to freak out zone. Crying shrieking and then chanting. I tried getting her to take deep breaths, to talk it out, I tried singing (this escalated things) J tried to play with her during a short calm period before round two. The first round lasted 15 minutes, then a 10 minute break and then another almost 15 min when she cried herself to sleep.

I hate thinking this could be something to do with treatment. I hate not knowing what to do. I hate all the bad stuff that seems to be pelting everyone around.

Its hard to have a truely thankful heart when you just feel sad.

I AM thankful that tomorrow is another day, and hopefully things will seem clearer.

The Weather

The media made a big deal about it. BIG.

I checked all the radars last night. I searched HARD for this storm. All I could see was a cloud that would bring some precip. That should melt upon contact as we were to reach temps above 30.

The media (this included weatherman) INSISTED we were in a winter weather advisory.
I'm still waiting to see it...even after driving around here for 5 hours today.

And they get paid the big bucks.

Its really gone now

My daughter has been so sweet to me.

Her hair fell out...most of it....2 weeks ago today. It was bound to happen, it had been thinning for weeks. The radiation finished the job, and exactly 2 weeks after starting...it was gone.

"I" was ready to have a good cry over it. She on the other hand, took the comb from my hand ** and proceded to comb it out herself. She thought it rather cool. With little to do but watch, I got the camera out. Her attitude kept my tears at bay. It turned out to be just the right sorta deal for her AND me. Who knew.

Since then, she's had these wispy little hairs all about her head...and when people/kids note her baldness, she corrects them saying there IS hair up there. Today she decided she didn't want those wispies up there and asked me to shave her head like Dad shaves his face. So we did. I couldn't have done it two weeks ago witho out crying. Today I did ok. She has been so sweet to me, baby stepping at a speed I can handle right along with her.

I feel like I need to treat these things matter of factly. Not make a huge deal out of things one way or the other. Going to the clinic, having hair fall out, grow in, fall out, shots, pokes, blood transfusion, radom puking, pills, drugs, fevers...its going to be what is for 3 years. Matter of fact has to be the way as making big deals out of everything will exhaust me and her.

However, some things hit harder then others. The hair loss is another sign that is in my face all the time reminding me that she is sick. That we are fighting an enemy that is strong and determined and sneaky. Like the devil himself. Its been a hard one for me. G only seems to mind at night when she is going to sleep...and doesn't want to....so mostly I think its a bid to stay up...otherwise she'd be bothered more often...right? Anyway.

G has been kind to me, taking baby steps and waiting for me to adjust. She's a sweetie. A completely bald one.

**curly hair doesn't fall out like straight...it sorta winds itself around itself and needs to be combed out. I suppose eventually she would have rubbed it out...but anyway...just a little note for those with straight hair

Interesting story...

A young woman was about to finish her first year of college. Like so many others her age, she considered herself to be very liberal, and among other liberal ideals, was very much in favor of higher taxes to support more government programs, in other words redistribution of wealth.

She was deeply ashamed that her father was a rather staunch conservative, a feeling she openly expressed. Based on the lectures that she had participated in, and the occasional chat with a professor, she felt that her father had for years harbored an evil, selfish desire to keep what he thought should be his.

One day she was challenging her father on his opposition to higher taxes on the rich and the need for more government programs.

The self-professed objectivity proclaimed by her professors had to be the truth and she indicated so to her father. He responded by asking how she was doing in school.

Taken aback, she answered rather haughtily that she had a 4.0 GPA, and let him know that it was tough to maintain, insisting that she was taking a very difficult course load and was constantly studying, which left her no time to go out and party like other people she knew. She didn't even have time for a boyfriend, and didn't really have many college friends because she spent all her time studying.

Her father listened and then asked, “How is your friend Audrey doing?”

She replied, “Audrey is barely getting by. All she takes are easy classes, she never studies and she barely has a 2.0 GPA. She is so popular on campus; college for her is a blast. She's always invited to all the parties and lots of times she doesn't even show up for classes because she's too hung over.”

Her wise father asked his daughter, “Why don't you go to the Dean's office and ask him to deduct 1.0 off your GPA and give it to your friend who only has a 2.0. That way you will both have a 3.0 GPA and certainly that would be a fair and equal distribution of GPA.”

The daughter, visibly shocked by her father's suggestion, angrily fired back, “That's a crazy idea, how would that be fair! I've worked really hard for my grades! I've invested a lot of time, and a lot of hard work! Audrey has done next to nothing toward her degree. She played while I worked my tail off!”

The father slowly smiled, winked and said gently, “Welcome to the conservative side of the fence.”

This made me cry

http://www.youtube.com/user/beachblndxo805#p/c/FE1A5A6BFF9C0F42/25/JI4h7u4yNC8

I haven't had Gabbie say to me what the video says, but she did tell me not to be sorry, I didn't do anything, its the cancer.

I needed a good cry, and this did it.

Chuck Norris Jokes....

I was introduced to these this week....did you know there was such a thing? They are so ridiculous, they are funny. Having a rough day? Google it and have a chuckle. Some are eye rollers to be sure, but I promise you'll at least smile.

In honor of myself being exceptionally tired tonight, I am posting a few CNJ that have to do with sleep...which I hope to be partaking in soon!

•Chuck Norris once ate an entire bottle of sleeping pills. They made him blink.

* Chuck Norris doesnt look under the bed for the boogie man, the boogie man looks under the bed for chuck norris….

* Chuck Norris doesnt sleep. He waits.

and I'm going to leave him to it. 'night all!

ah yes, the blog....

I need to get to bed here, G starts treatment again tomorrow, and we need to be in at the clinic by 10. Then there is this blog thing....

My mind seems to be clear of most extraneous thoughts these days. Pretty much focused on the four kids...and thats really it. Whats left of my brain power is spent listening to hubby's work issues, and maybe some mindless TV (if everyone is asleep)

I'm not sure if it is a weird coping mechanism, or I'm to tired to care, or its a prayer thing. I certainly feel mostly peaceful, so I'll just except what is. It works.

But it is making for some boring blog posts.

Sorry about that.

Fall Saturday

We are having a classic fall Saturday in Minnesota today and I am loving it!

The "men" went off on a hunting trip. Dad was a bit tired and wasn't terribly excited at the onset, but I know once he gets going he'll be fine and his brain needs a break from work. A break he won't take if he stays home. I'm glad the "men" have this to do together. The memories they are making make my heart happy.

The girls and I had a great night in. We watched movies, ate pizza bread, popcorn and icecream. We slept in and ate cinnamon rolls and applesauce breakfast while watching cartoons.

In a bit we will take some showers and get ready to go to Grandmas for lunch, and then we are all going to see a play at the high school.

There is a light snow falling outside periodically to complete the picture.

The poll wasn't overly popular, but none the less interesting! I've paid attention to the chores I leave for last, which tend to be the ones a person doesn't like doing. For me, hands down, its the paper issue. Every time a person comes into this house they bring an average of 3 pieces of paper I think. Even if a person only comes in once a day, thats 18 pieces that need attention. These people come and go a lot more then this. Somedays I dream of having my own secretary. Oh well.

Using the prompt from Nablopomo worked out well for me yesterday...we'll try again!

What's the biggest sacrifice you've ever made for another person? Was it worth it?

The biggest sacrifice I ever made was moving to New Mexico with my new husband. Moving and facing so many unknowns was seriously out of my type A comfort zone.

To this point I had lived my life rather safely and took only minor risks. I went to college 50 miles from home. I went into the Air Guard. To some this would seem a big jump from safty, but I was familiar with the military and doing this only obligated me to being a weekend warrior. At the time actually going to war seemed a way off possibility, I was 17 at time, anyway. Minor.

Then I came home from work and my hubby asked me what I thought about Albuquerque. To be honest, I had never given a thought to the place. I knew he was applying all over, but it never really occured to me that he would actually get a job so far from everyone I ever knew. Nor did it seem a reality that we would actually TAKE a job so far from home. HA!

Move we did. My hubby has pushed me numerous times in our life together. The move to New Mexico being the first big one. Was it worth it? You bet! His jumping, and either pushing me or pulling me along has been the best thing for me. I am so much better at rolling with what comes along then I ever would have been. Plus life is more exciting this way. I never know what he'll think of next. I love it.

NaBloPoMo

Drawing a complete and total blank on what to blog about (because I've done such a stellar job so far this week, insert whistling....) I suddenly remembered the website to which I went too when I first onto this annual challenge, remembering that they provide blogging prompts! Hooray! Now if this post stinks, I can blame them. Sorta.

Todays prompt:

What do you *really* wish you were doing right now, and how soon do you think you can make it happen?

I really wish that I was back in Mexico. That tomorrow agenda involved reading a book while lounging in a beach chair, slushie drink by my side. How soon can I make this happen? Well, based on current circumstances, it'll be a good 3 years most likely before I will have a chance to go again.

So, perhaps something a little more practical. I read a post on FB today about napping in fleece pajamas. Doesn't that sound just wonderful? It has been on my mind since I read it. So, fleece pajamas are now on my Christmas list....thats how I'm making it happen :D

Tuesday

Some days it just seems a bit of a slam. There were just so so so many prayer requests that seem to cross my way today. So many accidents, people with really hard roads to travel, illness to deal with, challeneges with children and even with pets. Its overwhelming sometimes. It seems to me satan is revving up his engines, showing me lots of bad.

I'm going to hand it back to him though. I am sure that these trials, can and will result in so many blessings for the future. Just hang on everyone, keep your eyes on the prize, and keep praying!

miscellany monday

I borrowed this idea from a friend who blogs (thanks Lindy) but can NOT get the nifty tag to work. It keeps telling me there is a an error in the tag and I have gone over this numerous times very carefully. I give, even though I wanted to give proper credit to "lowercase letters" who inspired the idea (as far as I know)

So, without further ado...and with way to much fanfare then needed for my little thoughts...here they are

1. once you get going with the house cleaning...it really is theraputic, I promise

2. best preschooler question of the day: "Mom, what is Tinkerbells phone number?"

3. homemade apple butter is a fantastic joy in life

4. a bed complete with a heated matress pad is a wonderful thing to look forward to

Chores

I've been doing some chores this morning, with out a lot of thought to which ones to tackle first. In doing so, I eventually realized, I had done the ones I don't mind doing, and the ones I don't want to do were left. So, I went to check on FB status' naturally. LOL.

While doing this a blog post came to mind WHILE I WAS at the computer no less, AND no one has bugged me to do anything else yet. SO I get to complete the thought. (not sure what crazy thing is occuring in the cosmos to allow this to happen)

I created a poll of my top 5 most disliked chores. Go ahead and vote and add a comment as to why that one gets your vote, or which chore you think is missing from this poll. Sometimes a little misery loves company. Perhaps you will find someone who dislikes the same one you do, and you can comiserate jut that much more, while you do the chore, of course! ;)

How is it...

that after being gone for a very long week, one that felt like 3 weeks, with kid on the phone during said long week telling you how much they missed you....it can feel like you never left in like 3 minutes? Really there should be some sort of honeymoon to gradually reintroduce a person, but not so much.

I'm home now. Hopefully I will blog about stuff other then cancer. But I make no promises.

Beads of Courage

The beads of courage program is a neat program that helps critcally ill kids keep track of all they go through during treatment. Its increasingly hard to keep track of how many things she has gone through. Just how many infusions, pokes ,drugs, doc visits, lumbar punctures, biopsies, hospital stays, transfusions, and so on. These beads help the kids remember and be able to tell their stories.

I was very intrested in the program as G is so young, I'm sure that this will all have a significant impact on her always, but the details might get fuzzy. This bead chain will help us tell her her story. She and I got all the beads collected this week and strung them this afternoon. They are averaged sized "pony" sized beads for the most part along with 6 slightly larger beads that spell out her name. When put together on the string, the bead chain is already nearly as tall as she is. Its incredible to think how long it will be when we are through all of this.

Check out this website if your interested in more information:

There are days.....

when an apple makes the perfect snack....and apple and a tall glass of ice water.

Then there are days when a bag of chocolate drizzled caramel corn and a diet c o k e is the only thing that will work. Today was that kind of day. I feel better too, go figure.

Its that time of year...

Its the November challenge, can you write in your blog every day for a month? It would seem unlikely this year, BUT as I like traditions, and have given up nearly all of them this year (I didn't make one thing with apples this year, and didn't notice until October! So not me.) I think I'd like to see if I can swing this one.

Today is the first day of November, and so often it is super cold and icky out by now. This year however it has been so nice. Like go for a walk outside and not freeze nice. Weird for MN. Today however, I am at the RMH as G has medical appts galore this week. I was looking forward to coming so we could play and have fun, but it would appear that is not to be the case. She is coughing up a storm, almost nonstop, and I just got done cleaning up everything I convinced her to eat today (thank goodness the RMH also has washing machines at our disposal) I'm not sure what to do, I can't really give her anything. She's trying to nap. I'm worried, I want to fix it. I want her to at least enjoy the things here before we have to go back to doctors. I'm wondering if she is going to get sicker and we will have to go even earlier to the doctors. I'm trying hard to remain positive, but I'd like to catch a break here soon. Please?

Happy Halloween

I should be packing up and getting ready for G and myself to head back to the Ronald Mc House we are staying at while she gets her many treatments in the upcoming week. But I'm not. DH is sleeping/watching football. G is asleep on his lap. S is singing along to music on my ipod next to me. H fell asleep while doing her required 35 min or reading for school (this could be why it takes a weekend). J is working on his tree fort. Sometimes you just need to freeze a moment and what better place.

Soon I will need to finish the laundry and start dressing kids up. G and I will go with DH and the big girls to do some trick or treating before we leave town and start another week.

I think we'll turn the pumpkin that never got carved into a turkey.

Another wild week

Its Friday, and when I think about the whirlwind of things that have occured this week it makes me dizzy! I sure hope things slow down soon. All day today I've had this sorta itchy feeling like mosquito bites, but I don't have any bites in the places that sorta itch. Its an odd feeling and either I have an odd disease or the stress levels are a little to high. Or something. I sure hope it goes away soon.

OK, so, whats going on.

Mother guilt over not being as plugged in as I might have been with child who started middle school. Midterm is approaching, and he's had some things not turned in. Its just a huge adjustment and he's had to figure out a lot of it on his own. I feel bad, he says its fine. Growing up is painful sometimes.

This prompted a more in depth check in with the 5th grader. She claims life is fine and she doesn't feel neglected. Life is good, she better not be lying! ;0

The kindergarten gal is doing well. She is back to loving school, this can vary day to day based on the outcome of gym class. She got to cut more this week, and color less. Her birthday party invites went out. Life is good! AND she was diagnosed with asthma. Of course she was. We've got the meds and supplies. Its not super severe, just another thing to monitor.

The preschooler has completed phase one of her Leukemia treatment. Phase two is going to be beastly. LOTS of trips to the hospital. I'm already very tired of the drive, and am determined to figure out how to make it in the 2 hours everyone says it takes. So much traffic!

The dog continues on. She is officially 14.5 years old this week. Reasonably good heatlh, we are amazed she keeps going!

The husband has had a crazy week with work. So many things going on there to, it is a struggle for him to balance it all. But so far he's doing it.

I did some chasing my tail today. Spent way to much time on the phone coordinating doctor appointments for next week. I wish I could just deep clean my entire house. I need to get everyone out of it, and just SCRUB. I think that having that done might make my scrambled insides feel, well, less scrambled. But, its not going to happen probably. Must keep going.

Monday, October 4, 2010

Hello? Hello?

Friends prompted me to change the ol blog lay out today. Thank you. Looks more fallish now don't you think?

I didn't even look to see exactly when I last wrote here, but its been awhile. School has started. My son started mid school. He likes it, class changing every 45 minutes its awesome Mom,and the day goes by so fast. I hope his report card reflects positively on things as well. H started 5th grad with a hop and a jump, until she got going. She's got a tough teacher this year which she got a little bucky about, but overall is going to be good for her I think. S started kindergarten. Of the kids I've sent to school so far, she has been the easiest. She is such an old 5 year old. Her bday is next week, I'm pretty sure she is planning to just skip ahead to 12.

Most people by now know that at the beginning of September my youngest was diagnosed with Leukemia. We have a caring bridge website set up to keep people updated with what is what with her and that. Today we marked the 29th day of the induction phase of treatment. It seems monumental, and it has been, but this is the shortest of the phase. So, so much to go through yet, BUT this phase is marked off, completed and goals met.

Today I showed some promise of sticking my neck more fully into the game of life I think. Overall the other kids have gotten what they needed. We have had a tremendous support system. Fantastic, wonderful, fabulous. We are continually awed by it all. I made some appointments for the other kiddos though and am proud of myself. At the start of diagnosis, it was half a day at a time, then day at a time. the last two weeks I made strides at looking at life a week at a time. Today, today I made an appointment for NEXT week! I know! Cool huh? baby steps here. ;)

I hope to get back to blogging as a means of having a place to remmeber stuff about the rest of life, while we deal with finding our new normal. When I set out to write this post, I wanted to say: No Leukemia talk here. However, thats probably not all that practical. Its already been interesting to watch people not talk about the elephant in the room with its trunk wrapped around your their shoulders. We are officially "the family with the cancer kid". Now, we are attempting to find a new normal that includes having cancer as part of normal, while trying to maintain some thing that is/was normal, if that makes any sense at all. So basically, its bound to come up! :D

Anyway. Happy October peeps!

Giveaway!!

One of my new favorite blogs, www.keepmecurly.com is having a give away for one of my favorite web stores:

Go here:

http://www.keepmecurly.com/2010/08/giveaway-snapaholics-hair-bling.html#comment-form

to read more about the give away.

Snapaholics is THE place for hair bling. Snaps are my absolute favorite, and these websites are teaching me to do new things with my girls' hair in the natural way I like. I recently purchased a new beader from the website that I absolutely love. It looks like a extra long latch hook rug. I've shied away from beads thus far as it just frustrated me. This week I used it and I'm a convert!! Love the beaded look on my girl and the process!

Let me know if you are a fan, and if you enter!

What can I say?

It's summer! While I've written some great entertaining thought provoking (ok, well maybe just entertaining) they've only been in my head. The only reason I'm actually here now is because I did a fast cleaning like a mad women and now I'm sitting in my bedroom alone because the kids are afraid I'll give them more chores to do.

Then I got the idea that I could do a quick, "Things I've learned this summer" list so I thought I'd give it a try.

1. I am proud that I sucessfully made artisian bread and will take that up again this fall when it cools off.

2. I learned that you can over gel jam. (if anyone needs a door stop that looks like jam just let me know)

3. I learned that making freezer jam is easy peasy and tastes yummy

4. Sleep is vitally important. And really, unless you have a baby you can blame, you gotta have it. Talk to your doctor if you not sleeping, I promise you won't regret it.

5. Having a friend with similar life circumstances is vital to a Mom's mental health. I think this so much that I think someone should have match making forums for this. Its nearly as important as finding a spouse! As a matter of fact, I'm quite certain that having a friend like that can save your marriage! :)

6. Having a 3 year old in your house with a sense of humor and great timing can really save the day.

7. Quiet time is necessary for everyone, especially Mom.

8. MOST people do not have bodies that belong in bikinis

9. 11 year olds boys........are handfuls

10. There is no such thing as quiet time for Mom in a house with 4 kids

11. 3 year olds don't care if your trying to write a blog post, the first one in 2 months, and if you presist, they will do something like stick their feet in your face and ask you to play with them (the feet not the 3 year old herself)

12. Getting hit in the head with a golf ball....hurts.

13. Winning the lottery and getting your hand pooped on by a bird while opening the car door have very similar odds of actually happening to you. Guess which one happened to me?

14. Camping truly is the best family vacation.

15. Getting caught in a hailstorm that periodically shoots out softball sized stones is just down right scary, but survivable. Buick's are tough. OOOOO-RAH! ;)

16. Working air conditioning is a true blessing.

17. Swimming pools can do wonders for curing a house full of grumpy kids....even if Mom is to tired to think straight. Just go, it'll be worth it.

18. Harmonica's might be the most annoying instrument to ever be put in a 3 year olds hands. Well, it runs a close second to a kazoo.

19. Taking time to just sit and feel the breeze and think of only that, is a beautiful thing

20. I really really really do love my kids!

Hangin out!

Thats we've been doing! OR we've been running around so much that my 3 year old (my run around side kick) has officially turned into a crazy monkey! LOL

Its that busy time of year, song fests, band concerts, song fests, field trips, dare graduation and there is still that school thing with homework that needs to be done, while the weather says come outside and play!!

This past weekend we did get the camper cleaned up and dewinterized so it is officially ready for our maiden voyage of 2010 this coming weekend...that'll be fun!

Summer officially starts soon....only 12 days left of school for the big kids! Look out, here it comes!

Spring Stars

The bigger two girls had their spring dance show this past Sunday. It was a little tricky as DH has back issues and couldn't come, and each girl was in a different show...back to back. 4 hours of dance shows makes for one long afternoon for a 3 year old who takes naps daily. BUT she did wonderfully. I wasn't able to concentrate on taking pictures like I'd wish to...but you do what you can do!

Miss H, Her group this year, well, they've had good moments...but as you can see...they are a bit off. Her good friend is behind her in this shot...they were "on"

Is she a doll or what?

And now I'm stopping because uploading is being weird and I don't want to fight it. Maybe next show I'll get better pics and blogger will cooperate...are you waiting with baited breath?

The basement

The basement is moving along!!  We had our renter move out last July.  It was a blessed relief to have our house feel all ours.  Sharing was getting to be a harder and harder strain.

There was a lot to do down there.  Cleaning turned into gutting, and that meant all the way down through the paneling, the styrofoam insulation, to the cinder block wall.

That took us quite awhile.  We filled a 20ft dumpster (the biggest waste management had) and then another 6ft one twice.

We are now on the more fun part!!  BUILDING it back.  All the framing is done.  And through the great blessing of my Dad and brother coming, we made tremendous progress on electrical.  There are few things that need to be done yet before an inspector can be called.  About 30 outlets have wire ran to them, 16 can lights installed and 3 overhead lights, two in bedrooms and one for a future pool table.

The area we are trying to finish is about 1100 sq feet.  It will have two bedrooms, 10x12 size, a bathroom, storage closet and 4 living areas that are all connected.

Progress has been halted do to my hubby’s back injury.  And super busy May weekends…..tis the season for dance recitals, confirmations, first communions, piano recitals, graduations and the like.  Its ok though, we’ll take the baby steps here as long as we keep moving towards the goal.  I can’t wait to have a place to put all the kids STUFF!

Oh, and we could also have space to actually house a guest or two in style!  LOL

Copy of DSCN0612

This is the first room you will walk into when you come down the stairs.  The wire hanging in the middle is to be a light over a pool table some day.  Straight ahead to the left is a storage closet, to the right the bathroom.  Way to the right will be the TV area, and in this picture…where you see the guys standing…will be the craft area.  The bedrooms then are on the left.

Copy of DSCN0611

This picture is moved just slightly left of the last, so you can see the space that will be the TV and craft area.

Copy of DSCN0607

The guys are in the craft area no…can you see all the light!  So exciting!

Copy of DSCN0610

This will be J’s room.  Both bedrooms have duct work running through them, which will need to stay as is.  In an older ranch, moving the ducts can result in cold spots and, just trouble.  So we intend to finish it off as nicely as possible.  To the left in this picture is a closet and straight through will be H’s room.  her closet is HUGE…like 6x8.

There is one more area that is a sharp turn right off the stairs…a space about 9x12 that will be perfect to house the little girls kitchen set, dress up and babies.

Sure will be grand!

Happy Earth Day

Me: G, whatcha doing??

G: watching the flowers grow

Me: good enough!

Racism part 2

I talked to both teachers at preschool yesterday. Neither teacher was at all surprised by the student in question. That mostly makes me very sad. 5 year olds that throw stuff like that out of their mouths? And no one is surprised?

What dawned on my here is the powerlessness of it all. I can't stop people from saying these things. From hurting my precious beautiful girls. It breaks my heart more then anything. I can't even get angry about it. I think probably because I'm mostly confused. I just don't understand how skin color can make someone better or worse. Its just SKIN! Looking at my little girls blank faces as I tried to explain racism in preschool terms just plain sucked.

I new that these issues would become apart of my life once we said yes after be choosen to be these little girls parents. I have thought about what I would say, I was ready to come out fighting. You betcha, no one is going to say those things to MY KIDS! But I don't have fight. I'm sad. I just feel like standing there with the same blank look my girls gave me. It makes no sense to me racism. How can this little girl who has been playing with my little girl for 2 years now suddenly not want to touch my little girl?? What happened?

It didn't help that at dance last night no one wanted to be her partner. I don't know why, the little girl who should have leaned on her back and tapped her foot and then hold hands with her and twirl, just wouldn't she said.

I didn't know this stuff started now. In preschool. I thought I had a little time yet. It just sucks.

FIRST!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jacob has had an interesting year of wrestling this year. Wrestling is a much more mental game then I ever realized. As Jacob has been, growing and changing lets say this winter, yeah, lets say that, growing and changing, ha, well, its effected his game on that mat. He's been up and down and so close so much of the time. He just hasn't been able to put it all together. At this age, you really need too win. Brawn just won't win it any more.

Today he did. It was game on. He had a plan, he was calm collected and ready to do it. Hubby said it best, it was the first time he won mentally. He exuded a confidence that said, "this is MY match, this is how we're going to play it". The first match he ended up down just once...gave up 2 pts and then peeled the guy off of him, stood up and that was the end of any advantage the guy had. At the end of the 3 period he pinned him. The second guy he wrestled after a loooong break which made me nervous a bit. Same thing nearly except for giving up any points and he pinned the guy at the end of the second period.

And that was that. You pin two guys and your done! LOL. Great way to end an intersting season.

Unfortunately, my wrestler seems to be now coming down with a cold and sounds awful tonight. Not fun. Poor guy...got him vicked up and the steamer going.

Racism

Sigh.

Racism makes me angry. It makes me sad. It makes me crazy. It. Well.

Sigh.

But it exists, and because I agreed to, we agreed to have the family we do, I knew that it was something I would need to explain to my precious babies early on and that some day, probably multiple days we would need to deal with it up close and personal.

But how does one go about explaining that to your 3 and 5 year old? Or even younger. I've been thinking about it for a good while. Like since their birth...but haven't broached it. Who would want to? I sure didn't, and its easy to put it off.

Today however, today, it slapped us in the face. Well, me anyway, the comment didn't make sense to my 5 year old it was directed too. Mostly because of another incident involving her friend at preschool that reduced her to tears. It was a "fabulous" day there. Sigh.

Today while I was making lunch, S came to me and said, ***** said she doesn't want to touch my skin because its brown not white.

I wanted to cry. I didn't then, but I am now, S is safely ensconced in her bed napping.

I asked a few questions about it, but mostly S was puzzled as to why.

I decided it was time to lay it out there and give her tools. I told her what this girl said was racist. And then explained that some people believe that they are better then others because of their skin colors. But we know that this is not true at all. God made us each uniquely, some things about us make us like others, lots of things about us make us unique. Color or skin does not make you better or worse then anyone else. Its just what is.

I told her also that its NOT ok for people to talk like that at all. And if happens again she needs to tell the teacher right away. I think I will send a note to her teacher over it as well.

S wasn't upset by this, puzzled, but not upset. I know the day will come where ignorance will speak louder and more hurtful and slam into her bruttely. I won't be able to stop it. This wasn't it. It was just a tiny taste.

I hate it.

3 Year old Silliness

I love my 3 year old and every thing about her. She is the happiest person I've ever met. Sometimes she starts laughing, genuie laugh, only because she heard someone laugh and thought she would just join in. I am very blessed to spend days with this special soul. I need to record some of her here as these days with her are quickly passing for sure.

This started as a full sized potato, she was determined to peel it and did so giggling and laughing at her attempts that didn't exactly go the way Mom's did. She never once got angry or frustrated. I have much to learn from this child.

Today we were in a restaurant, a very kid friendly one in which many farmers come for lunch nearly every day. Mom was taking a little bit to long chatting with a friend...and G wander a few tables away, (trust me, this is OK in the place) and introduced herself to a Grandpa type individual. I then just watched out of the corner of my eye, and she made this man smile again and again as she explained the wonders of her pink pig ballerina piggy bank. It was a beautiful thing.

Did I mention she has a special flair for dressup? she was quite pleased with this outfit. (ignore dog who suddenly needs brushing, and the bum in the chair LOL)

Funny/interesting/words of wisdom from the 3 year old:

*** The night prior we had gone to see a living stations of the cross presentation by the kids in Wednesday religion class put on:

G: Mom, remember those solidiers last night, the ones that killed Jesus, I think maybe they were bullies

M: I think your right G

*** At Target striking up conversation with check out lady say, 50ish)

Lady: Hello there!
G: do you know me??
L: well no...
G: I'm G! and I'm 3 cause I had a birthday!
L: wow! 3! you've almost caught up to me!
G: then you will be three too?
L: LOL
G: then will you turn chocloate like me too?

definate pause by me the writer of the check....

L: yes, I like chocolate too!

NO idea if she couldnt' understand her (definate possibility) or just used grace to steer things in a different way. Oy.

**** G sits behind me in the truck so I can hear all of her chatter....today she and I took a little road trip. In the past we have had talks about why Mom can't go super fast as there are rules to how fast you can go and if you break them the policeman will give you a ticket. So today, we picked up a very slow care in front of us, G noticed that I applied the breaks and slowed down. I knew this because suddenly from the back seat there was this directive:

MOM! Go medium and get around this car!!

She's a kick, I'm glad I have her to brighten my days!

She did it!!!

H started piano 18 months ago nearly exactly to the time where she participated in the finals for MMTA (Minnesota Music Teachers Association). She has taken to piano like a duck to water. I have little understanding of such a thing as I have never taken to ANYTHING like a duck to water. She amazes me. What I admire most is her "aw shucks" sorta no big deal, its just something I do, kind of attitude.

I got the results mid morning yesterday, and she was indeed selected to participate in the Honors Concert that will take place in Minneapolis in June. We will need to hoof it to the cities for 3 rehersals prior to this concert and she will need to learn a new piece of music and have it memorized in a months time. When I explained what will be required of her if she chooses to participate, she calmly says, "OK"

Why did I think she would be anything BUT calm. When I called her at school to tell her, (something I've never done...call her at school) she just says, "cool" When I explained to her that this was REALLY cool...like jump up and down and squeal cool...she just giggled. A quiet little giggle. I said, no! I'm serious! start jumping up and down and squealing! She just said, "Mom!" in that whiney sorta way pre adolescent girls prefect.

Anyway. I'm proud of my girl. So far she seems to really enjoy this part of piano. I want to carefully encourage her to keep up with it, while not burning out either. Hmmm....

In the middle of writing this, said child calls me from school to ask me about an assignment due today at school. Something I've never heard of or seen around here....and I'm cleaning the house today (hence the blog post lol) Apparently this is a rather largish assignment with some largish consequences attached for not completing it.

Sometimes, the gifts we are given, hers being a general take things as they come calmness come around and slap us in the face in the form of deadlines and such. She manages to pull it off though.

This piece she played for 3 contests now, this piece, well, it was tanking big time days before the first contest. She pulled it together though!!

My guess is she'll figure this one out too.

Now, do I go vacume or shop for formal dresses for my 9 year old......

First Tooth!

This is the before....Sophia was DETERMINED that this tooth was coming out tonight...she had wiggled and wiggled it for days. She tried to twist it, but it hurt to much to do so and just wanted it OUT. So, Dad said he would do it. This is the anticipation smile.....

The decided grabbing it with a napkin would be the way to go, and they gave it a good try, but it wouldn't give as the napkin made Dad's finger to slippy. They decided to go the old fashion bare finger grip.

THAT WORKED!!!!!!

Borrowing from a friend....

Lame. Yeah, lately, I have all these ideas to jazz up the ol blog...but I"m lame.

I have ideas for posts....the weighted blanket, the basement project, hearing God, wrestling and piano contests, cute sayings from the outgoing 3 year old.....but alas these posts seem locked in my head at the moment. I am writing this to make an out loud promise to get them out, so they won't be lost forever!

:D

In a perfect world.....

As UNICEF continues its "agenda" in Haiti....here is another prespective.

http://www.rageagainsttheminivan.com/2010/03/i-need-adoption.html

Its easy for a group such as UNICEF to act as though it were a perfect world. In a perfect world, they are right. There is no need for adoption. There are no empty homes longing for children. In a perfect world.....

But, dear UNICEF CEO's, we don't live in one. There are many true orphans in Haiti, longing for homes. Who are you to deny them one????

H: its still in your bed, would you like me to go get it for you? (said in a perfectly serious and helpful tone)

Me: um, no, thats ok dear, but thank you

H: sure Mom, no problem

Bees

Winter blahs continue. I feel like I'm pushing up hil though. Sigh.

Today my 5 year old says, "I wish we could just go play at the pool today"

Me too sweetie!

Then she chimes, "Well, at least there aren't any bees around"

True. I haven't had a bee problem in a good long while. Thanks S.

Bloggedy Blog Blog

Pretty quiet on the blog front.

(stop reading if you have had all the whine you can take for today thank you)

Got a case of the winter blahs here this week I think. I didn't realize they were as bad as they were until today when it all just hit the fan.

Everything the kids did today bugged me to no end. I was not the best Mom for them today. I didn't want to be around anyone really so much and this included being around myself, which, if you've ever tried, is rather hard to escape from....just sayin.

I need a break, its only been 16 days since I had one. I've sure gone a whole lot longer. But the loading everyone up in winter gear multiple times each day has just run its course. I'm tired of skating about in ice filled parking lots. I want to wash my truck with out fear of killing the seals on the doors. I'm tired of hanging up coats, stashing away hats and mittens, cleaning floors from muddy drippy boots. I'm tired of being happy about another playdough mess, or dress up, or painting, or just about any winter kid occupying activity you can think of.

I lost it at shower time tonight after having to explain for the 15 bazillionth time that YES the shower curtain MUST BE CLOSED when the shower is on as I'm looking at my now dripping wet bathroom while standing in wet socks. Which I realize has nothing at all to do with winter but it shows my frame of mind. Its relocated to approximately 6 paces south of crazy.

Hubby came home about 9 tonight, which is an hour earlier then I expected him, to let me know things are "ramping up" Which is code for "I'm going to be even busier" He's already been gone three nights this week. Busier? Oh Joy.

I've got to find away to pull out of this winter blah mood for sure. Somehow. Before the kids trade me in for a new model.

Snow Day

My poor truck! Its had a rough winter...I unburied it all the way, defrosted and it and knocked all the icicles off. I need this baby, must take care of it!

Ahh, the mailbox, I found it. Notice the one on the left, it got mauled by the weekend snowplow guy this weekend. Fortunatly it was our renters and she is now gone,
as the mailbox will be next summer

J making a path for the mailman, apparently he got stuck today a few times

OH, wait, this has nothing to do with snow :)
Just a token wrestling picture, he got the better of this guy eventually,
but I didn't get a picture because
I was to busy yelling and/or holding my breath
How did I become a wrestling Mom?

My guy.
It was a tough match.
He was told he got second, but knew he didn't and that there was a scoring error.
This third place win spoke loudly for his character more then anything
I am very proud of him

Piano Star

H has done very well with piano. This is her second year of lessons and she amazes me with what she has learned. Piano playing has always amazed me, that whole make your hands do two separate things at the same time with the same intensity. She amazes me. I'm proud of her accomplishments here. She participated in the MMTA contest this past weekend for the first time, and has advanced to the next step! Way to go lady!

Dancing Star

This was the girls extra dance surprise for us. Gosh they are so dang cute.

The Hitch Kick, oh yeah, she got it!

Another star!

My Star!

5th Grade winter band concert was tonight. I'm very proud of my trombone player! J is a very sports minded individual and I wasn't so sure how he'd take to playing an instrument. However, I wanted him to experience it for at least a year. So far he seems to really enjoy it and has made no mention of quitting. Hooray!

He had a part in a trio tonight too, he said he was nervous....sweated it out a bit, but I couldn't tell. he did a great job! I'm proud of him!

Baby Its Cold Outside!

How cold is it????

Its sooooo cold my 3 year old acutally left her mittens on! THATS COLD!

We stayed in bed this AM hoping hoping for 2 hour late start. But alas, it was not to be. SIGH. As we are making the last drop off to preschool S started to complain her little toe hurt. Once arriving at school I checked the size on her boots.....WHOOPS! I thought for sure they were a big 13...NOPE! They are a 12! S wears a 1. Two stores later problem solved.

If anyone needs a size 5 pink boot....Walmart has like 20. Well my Walmart does anyway. They do not have any 1's or 2's.

Its suppose to be 20 on Sunday. That sounds like a heat wave.

The Newest Light Switcher....

This means going to the bathroom alone? Totally an option!! Hooray!!

Reason number 6754 for stalling the bedtime procedure....

"Mom, I slept with my toothbrush, and now I can't find it"

Minty fresh Eyeballs

Are you in the market for some? Here's what you do....

1. Rub "Vicks" vapor rub on your 3 year old.

2. Wash hands with soap and water.

3. Remove contact. Say, "wow, that kind of stings"

4. Quickly remove other contact (because your brain is frozen and the cause of the stinging has yet to connect all the way)

5. Then say, "wow! now my first eye is really stinging....and oh my my other eye is too!"

6. Ta-da! Minty fresh eyes.

Conclusions....soap and water does NOT remove Vics from your hands.

Snowflakes

On the first day of winter we decided we needed to make snowflakes! The girls had lots of fun. S loves to cut and is rather handy with the scissors. G on the other hand is rather scary with a scissors. I was proud that I let them use glitter in the house and I didn't take over. It was a good day.

One beautiful creation created. Ignore glue on shirt sleeve. Being creative is messy.

More Glitter! MORE!

And just a little more!

Its done!

Hey there....always think I'm going to get all these great Christmas posts in....and I'm loving reading blogs from those who do...but I just never seem to get that in. Nor did I get super great pictures taken this year.

BUT I did enjoy Christmas with my family. We got to stay home Christmas Eve and Christmas day....we had a great time...eating good food....going sledding....watching movies.....just hanging out. Saturday we went to my family.....lack of communication...lots of people pleasing going on...blah blah blah...but its over. Suday we went to hubby side of family......much less drama, nice this year. Then we went up north for New Years and had some more fun with SIL and family. Swiming, sleeping in, enjoying fabulous breakfast buffet, movies, games, Wii. Good times.

Now its January. -20 out this AM. Sigh.

The Kings came today....Christmas season, over and out!
