The consultation

My 4 year old says to me....

"Mom, G and I had a consultation...and even though the keys from bible school are mine, she can still play with them"

ME: a consultation??

S: Yeah Mom, you know, I talked to her about it, like a meeting

Where does she get stuff like that????

I'm moving

.....to Texas!!

I wish. I don't see WHY all of my friends and family won't join me. It is simply to cold here. It really makes no sense to continue to stay here and battle this anymore.

Did I mention I am tired of being cold?

The connection

Being a transracial family means being an out loud adoptive family. I knew this going in. And prepared accordingly as much as anyone can.

Being an out loud a-family means my childrens entrance into our family is not a secret. It means when people look at my family, adoption isn't to far from their minds. And this is a constant thing. Most of the time people keep their thoughts on this to themselves. In our community of friends, family and aquaintences, most of the questions have been asked. Still get the off the wall one periodically, but for the most part, people are used to the way we look.

A few weeks ago I was visiting my parents and had my 2 middle daughters with me. They have stayed overnight in the small town my parents live in and have attended church there. This community has been quiet thus far on their out loud status. (We have been a noticably transracial family for 4 years now, my oldest daughter could "pass", at least in the winter) It was after this visit that a lady who attends church with my parents shared with my mother her status as an adoptee. From what my Mom shared with me, the woman didn't need to hear so much from my Mom as she needed someone to hear her. Well, actually she did want to hear from Mom as well in regard to the more open type situations we have and what my kids thought about it. The woman comes from the era of closed adoption and being able to speak freely about it was not something offered to her.

It occured to me today what an opportunity being a transracial family is for others sometimes. It makes adoption something that can be talked about. It makes it less taboo for some.

While this is a serious subject and I am truely glad that seeing my kids in church helped this woman feel comfortable in confiding to my mother I can't help but insert my lame humor....it really ISN"T all about me (or my family) LOL

The unique situations I find myself in do to the decisions we made while creating our families continue to amaze me. I know that God's hand is in this and I thank him for the opportunities and hope he sends more our way.

Historic Day

What a day.

I want to be glad. I want to be happy. I want to be proud that our country is continuing to conquer racism and its evils.

But I just can't. I have a very sick feeling in my stomach with what is about to happen. Have you heard about the freedom of choice act?? How can they even call it that? How can they call it freedom of choice and then "require" ALL hospitals to preform abortions. What kind of choice is that? How is it a choice that MY tax dollars will now fund abortion? I am 100% with out any acception against abortion and now MY choice is being taken from ME! Under a law called freedom of CHOICE! Does anyone besides me not see the irony here??

AND our minor children will be able to go and have this "preformed" without consent. They can't have their tonsils out without parental permission, but they CAN murder their baby.

Informed consent, not needed. Thats what this law says. Apparently people don't need to educated about what they are about to do their bodies. Ignorance is best and our government supports it. Does THIS scare people??? It should even if you are for abortion.

There are lots of bloggers who can write about this issue with elogence and gentle pleeding. I'm not one. I am sincerely sick to my stomach at the thought of living in a country where this law exists. Its bad enough that abortion is legal at all, and now its just one HUGE step closer to complete loss of control. Because, COME ON! The federal government involvement in any social issues makes it better???

Where will it end? Will abortions begin to be required medically for babies deemed "damaged"? How about on the other end of life? If we REFUSE to acknowledge and respect life at is earliest stages, how long will it take for us to lose total respect for people in the end stages of life.

Fundementally I've always been able to understand the arguement of "choice" because each person should get to decide what happens too their body. Got it. Science is undeniable that from early early stages what is being aborted is human! And if someone is choosing to have this human killed, it's murder plain and simple! How else can it be looked at?? Babies are babies from the get go. They are not babies only if they are wanted. Those "cells" are human cells! And so, the idea of choice IMO HAS TOO extend towards the unborn. Has too.

The only in cases of rape or incest doesn't make it any less murder. Its still a human being killed. Two wrongs will never make a right. That baby is a victim just like its mother.

As I've said, I'm not very eloquent on this topic. I'm scared. I'm sick. I'm sad. I don't have any links for people to follow to sign petitions for this. Google it and they pop up. I just had to get some of this out.

I hope and pray that this man who now has the lives of so many in his hands will reconsider his commitment to signing such a horid bill should our congressmen be unable to kill it.

This bill is just wrong on every point. And I will not be able to respect any man who signs it. No matter which office he holds.

Happy MLK Day

My favorite MLK spoken desire:

To have my children judged by their character, not the color of their skin.

Amen.

Introducing....

2 year old G comes into the kitchen the other night....

pointing to herself says: Me, G

then proceeds to stick her hand out to me to be shook. Which I complied with. Then she turned and left the room.

I guess just in case we hadn't been properly introduced or something.

ITS WINTER

Its Friday and I have succumbed.

We have been plagued with frigid temps here resulting in early realease, late starts and no school all together kind of week. We have cleaned, we have baked, we have read, we have Wii'd (I know thats not a word), we have puzzled.

Today we are just watching Noggin as the big kids have indeed returned to school (only God knows if they will stay there until 3pm!) We have really watched very little TV this week but I'm simply done being creative and my other creative director hauled himself off to school too. Anyway, Between the shows Moose announces that its puzzle time quite happily (Moose never seems to have a bad day, candy corn being his only blot in the world) when my seemingly comatose 4 year old YELLS, NO ITS NOT! ITS WINTER TIME!!!!!!!! Go ahead Moose, I DARE you to argue with her. Knock yourself out.

It has been a week I tell you. DH has a cold (and you know how that goes), his van won't start. My truck broke (yes we spent most of yesterday home together truely marooned) The fix it guy called about out snow blower. Apparently a funeral for it would be cheeper.

On a happier note, I found a pair of "house shoes" that I just LOVE. And they were very reasonably priced, dare I say cheap?

I am the barefoot queen. Apparently as you age this becomes a problem. For one, my feet are COLD. I used to be the type that could go barefoot outdoors in the winter. This is no longer the case. My feet are cold to the point of distraction! In addition to this cold feeling comes the problem that came with this house. I have ceramic tile floors in my kitchen...in my way less then humble opinion, these do not belong in kitchens where one actually intends to spend time standing. They are unforgivingly HARD!!!! Resulting in all kinds of aches.

The shoes I found are from lands end. They are very light weight, they are warm, they offer support and traction! Accept on water, consider that warning! AND they come in fun colors. As I am only wearing them in the house why not get a fun color thought I!

So, anyway, here is the link:

Hit and Run

I've been meaning to write this some where just in case I need to have it handy. Like if my memory fails or something.

December 30, on our way to dinner.....

Sitting at an intersection waiting to make a right turn onto a southbound lane. Hubby is driving and sees a bronco that should be slowing for the yellow light SPEEDS UP! The car that was in the intersection waiting to make a left turn does and is hit in the back bumper by the bronco that should have been slowing down but instead has now sped through the red light.

The white luxury type vehicle is now off to the side...but the bronco has kept going!!

The tire is seriously injured on the vehicle because we followed him...and got his liscence plate and called 9 1 1. The "driver" pulls into a parking lot about a block from the hit....several other cars have followed us but still this car manages to elude and gets back onto the main street heading south for a good mile. We follow giving the 9 1 1 operator locations and somehow this guy manages to keep going on this damaged tire. We and another truck continue to follow him until the police catch up

This is probably not very eloquent, but its all true! It might have been cooler if all of us in that parking lot had staged a citizens arrest, but to be honest, we were all very skittish of said individual. His actions did not speak to any sort of level headedness

Or, we're all guilty of watching to much CSI and Criminal minds.

One or the other.

Happy New Years!!!

Woah! Its the 3rd already? How the heck did that happen??!?!?

Have a feeling this month could be a lot like that. I thought the fall was rough, now things are being added to the weekly calendar and anytime I mention it to DH he starts talking about February. Me thinks he won't be around much this month either. I am greatful that there is en'ough work to keep him busy though. Its like a mantra.....I'm greatful....I'm greatful....I'm greatful....even when I'm going to pull my hair out of my head right at the roots.

So, 2009. Here we go. I tried at two different dinner tables last week to explain resolutions to my older two. They didn't get it. Their resolutions were things like take a trip to Disney World and get a puppy. Neither of these things are going to happen and neither were interested in the slightest in things like studying math facts with more regularity or keeping their rooms cleaner.

I'm not so excited for them either. So I'm making a small one. I want to run somewhere this year. After the surgery this past year, this should be able to become a reality.

I also need to get us going on a will. It is past sad and onto embarassing not to have one at this point.

Mostly, I don't put a lot of stock in this new year new me blah blah stuff. BUT it is a new year and I hope a good one. So many close to me this year had rough ones that for them I hope for many more positive adventures.

For me, what I want, is to be ready for the next leap God wants me to take.

So, 2009, here I come!
